Dear grandmother you are from
Where the river begins
Ankles caked in mud
Where the blood of thunder is born
My parents they grew up
Wading along the water
Where it walks and wanders
It's way steady south
But I followed the factories
I followed the people
I looked towards the weather
And we’re no longer together
There's no Delta Sun
There's no Southern Rain
as I walk from this corner
in the quarter to Algiers
There's no northern lights
There's no snowing skies
as I cross the river
There's no thunder in my ears
|
This is not where I am from
This is not where I belong
The mouth of the river
the long winding way back north
This is where you were born
This is where you belong
the end of the road
our oceans will not be one
So I'll follow the factories
I'll follow the people
We'll look towards weather
and we'll no longer be together
And there’ll be no delta dawn
there'll be no southern wind
coming in through my window
with the radio light on.
But there'll be starry nights
there'll be my northern sky
that I will stay here layter
and wait to turn bryter
